Ogoni Deserves Justice

Ogoni Deserves Justice is the author's firsthand account of the environmental afflictions that the Ogoni people of Ogoni, Nigeria, suffered during the 35 years that Shell operated in Ogoniland. The author was a young boy growing up in Ogoni and witnessed Shell's arrival in 1958, when it began extraction activities. Environmental Pollution & Degradation: Environmental pollution started from the very first day that Shell began operations. Gas flaring, equipment failures and oil spills destroyed the Ogoni environment and caused the people to suffer many health issues, which led to protests. In 1990, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) was formed in Ogoni, Nigeria, where activists got involved in protesting against Shell and the military dictatorship governing Nigeria at the time. While protests were going on in Nigeria, the author was involved in activism in the UK and was one of the founding members of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP)-UK, based in London. This book details the story of the Ogoni struggle for justice, which led to protests; the mysterious murder of four chiefs; and the executions of nine MOSOP activists, including its leader and renowned writer and environmentalist, Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa. The Ogoni story garnered international involvement of Human Rights bodies, environmentalists and the UN. Ogoni Deserves Justice is a first-hand account of the pre- and post-oil exploration in Ogoniland and the struggle that the Ogoni people faced at the brink of annihilation.
